Review of Then She Found Me (2007) by Luann B — 12 Apr 2009
Monotone. Good performance, decent but flawed story, lovely touches to the film, if even with too much intent in every scene. It's got one note, a dull aching hum, throughout, and takes itself too seriously at every moment. Had their been a few light notes and characters who live a little and emote highs and lows, (and had there been a budget for promotion) I don't see how this film would not have succeeded. I mean, a restrained Bette Midler!? Come on...who casts Bette Midler and restrains her performance so?
A few issues that stood out and distracted were a 50 looking Helen Hunt playing 39, April (Hunt) and an emasculated Frank's (Firth) love at first meet a few hours after April's husband leaves her, nonexistent chemistry between Hunt and Broderick (although I think Broderick incapable of romantic chemistry onscreen.) The acting is top notch throughout, only too restrained and monotone, even with raised voices in emotionally heated moments.
