Review of Thelma & Louise (1991) by Vulcan S — 19 Feb 2010
An important landmark in the history of the road movie, and also a damn good movie on its own merits. The story is simple but compelling, and taks some surprising twists. Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis are both great as the leads.
I especially love Geena Davis's transformation over the course of the movie. Harvey Keitel is solid as the investigator on their trail, but he can't hide that New York accent, try as he may. Michael Madsen and Brad Pitt are both effective in smaller parts.
The movie shifts tone a lot; first it's funny, then it's dark and tragic, then it's exciting and rousing, but it manages to do each of these things well and make them all seem of a piece.
