Review of The Young Victoria (2009) by Gerard C — 03 May 2010
A well told, if not brisk, story of the early years of Queen Victoria's reign and courtship with Prince Albert of Germany. Unlike most other British period pieces, The Young Victoria wastes little time with superfluous side stories or identifying who the heroes (or heroines) and villians are.
Everything is very obvious and intentional. This is an example of efficient film-making done right. Emily does a commendable job portraying both the young queen's naivety, playfulness and courage, and her performance is complimented by other strong, yet restrained, acts by Paul Bettany, Miranda Richardson and Rupert Friend.
It's a worthy rental, even if you're not the biggest fan of the genre.
