Review of The Young Victoria (2009) by Susan R — 11 Aug 2010
A compelling mixture of historical drama and romantic story of the longest reigning British monarch. Some might consider it a bit dry in terms of historical approach without paying enough attention to the romantic story, but in fact I believe that much more stress could have been put on the power struggles and political intrigues surrounding the young monarch, as well as the rising of Prince Albert from being her husband to a companion in politics.
However this is only a minor point which absolutely has not effect on the overall feeling of watching a well-presented, colorful and remarkable depiction of Queen Victoria. Apart from having wonderful costumes, mesmerizing cinematography and entertaining story, The Young Victoria is most remarkable for the outstanding performance of Emily Blunt.
Blunt's shining performance is convincing, engaging and most of all credible. She completely manages to represent the transformation from a young princess to a Queen in this solid delivery by Jean Marc Vallee.
