Review of The Young Victoria (2009) by Sabra E — 16 Feb 2011
I have to admit -- period pieces are a guilty pleasure of mine. I know they shouldn't have to be, but I'd like to think I'm more hardcore than that. Not "total bro" hardcore, like Transformers 2 or Hellboy or anything, but I'm also not a thirteen year-old boy trying to get a fix on some action.
Emily Blunt is great, her costumes and jewelry were wonderful sights to behold, and now I have a crush on Rupert Friend: a charming mix between Orlando Bloom and any really sweet blond guy with great manners. He really epitomizes the ideal boyfriend in this movie; especially for a strong-minded queen refusing to take any sh*t from a manipulative court out to mold her into what they want her to be--a vessel of power for anyone wanting to milk it.
The whole cast is great, in fact: Bettany, Richardson, I know the director came from left field, so it's probably fair to say he had a great team to work with, AND...I even cried at the end; it's been a while since that's happened, and oh yes, it felt nice.
