Review of The Year of Living Dangerously (1982) by Christian D — 10 Sep 2004
:fresh: A picturesque and sometimes affecting romantic political drama, Peter Weir's The Year of Living Dangerously is also somewhat distant, aloof, and strangely uninvolving, given it's subject material. Set in Jakarta, Indonesia in 1965, the film stars Mel Gibson and Sigourney Weaver in parts that are generally underwritten, though Linda Hunt (in an Oscar-winning supporting role), as a diminutive (and male) photojournalist, brings some much needed gravity and a world-weary sense of grief that is glossily underdeveloped in the film itself.
