Review of The Yards (2000) by Jezzy A — 20 Aug 2007
James Gray's The Yards is a sweeping and assured sophomore effort, a Greek tragedy by way of Sidney Lumet's New York dramas. Gray directs with a seriousness and an appreciation for the slow build that stands at stark odds with the hipness and self-referentiality that plague most contemporary indie films.
With an excellent ensemble cast, beautiful cinematography by Harris Savides, and a wonderfully elegiac score by Howard Shore.
