Review of The Wrestler (2008) by Peter N — 03 Sep 2012
Normally, a film like this is a little bit too depressing for my tastes, but Mickey Rourke gives one of the most incredible performances in film history. I have never seen a more tragic or beautifully developed character than Randy the Ram.
Darren Aronofsky's superb direction makes every scene compellingly real, leaving little room for any dull moments in this vivid portrayal of Randy's sad and somewhat wasted existence. Props to Marisa Tomei for doing a fantastic job in what was obviously a very uncomfortable role.
This is quite possibly the saddest film I have ever seen, and one of the few that made me cry during its conclusion. If a film is powerful enough to stir that kind of emotion, it HAS to be epic.
