Review of The Wrestler (2008) by Alexander P — 11 Sep 2013
Darren Aronofsky directs one of 2008's best films: The Wrestler. Mickey Rourke plays Randy 'The Ram' Robinson, an aging 80's Wrestling star who now, 20 years past his prime scrapes by with the odd small performance at small venues.
His career struggles mirror his home life and he has little to no relationship with his estranged daughter. Unable to let go of his wrestling roots he comes up against difficult decisions as a heart attack turns his world upside down.
He has to make changes to his life and struggles to adapt to a life without Wrestling. He decides to make amends with his daughter, his life begins to take a turn, but his love for the ring is strong and constantly draws him back to his wrestling roots.
This is a stunning film, a masterfully made drama, with the best performance of Rourke's career. It's heart wrenching, full of feeling and as tender as it is tough. Don't be put off that this is a film about Wrestling.
It is not. It's an amazing story about a mans journey through some life changing events and some very difficult personal decisions. This film is not to be missed.
