Review of The Wreck of the Mary Deare (1959) by Mereie D — 13 Nov 2009
â??The Wreck of the Mary Deareâ?? (1959) by Michael Anderson, starring Gary Cooper, Charlton Heston, Richard Harris, and others. The first half hour led me to believe this would be a disaster movie with thriller aspects (what is Cooperâ??s character up to, what is he hiding - besides a body on a ship?).
I am no particular fan of men running around on half-lit ships in storms with scuba diversâ?? suits (final scene), but the special effects used in these scenes were quite convincing for a late fifties movie.
The story is good too (based on a novel by Hammond Innes), but the second half of the movie is problematic. The excitement of the opening scenes on the ship peters out and turns into a rather dull display of legal talk in court and a few other places.
As soon as weâ??ve found out for sure who the good guys and the bad guys are, there is little left to remain in oneâ??s seat for. Apart from the final scene, that is.
