Review of The World's End (2013) by Jc E — 05 Feb 2014
I really wanted to see this, based solely on the fact that 'Shaun of the Dead' and 'Hot Fuzz' were so outrageously funny. Then I saw the preview and the only takeaway that I got from it was Nero's "Doomsday" that was pulsating in the background.
(Seriously, it's a great workout song.) It didn't look near as good as I was hoping it would, and the little quip about the Bible was off-putting. Simon Pegg (Star Trek Into Darkness) is kind of notorious for his anti-religious jibes.
So, like most movies nowadays, I opted to Netflix it. The end result wasn't as bad as I'd feared, but it didn't measure up to 'This is the End' from earlier in the year. Pegg and Nick Frost (Snow White and the Huntsman) are on top of their game again, with this one a more heartfelt approach, despite the craziness that ensues in ways that only writer/director Edgar Wright (Scott Pilgrim vs.
The World) can think of. There are some interesting co-stars, such as Rosamund Pike (Barney's Version), Martin Freeman (The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug), Pierce Brosnan (Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Theif), and a nice touch of Bill Nighy (Jack the Giant Slayer).
It's pretty fun, even if it's a little religiously snide. But if you liked the other Wright/Pegg/Frost collaborations, you'll like this one too.
