Review of The World Without US (2008) by James M — 20 Aug 2012
This is a film with an agenda. The only possibilities explored were negative consequences to the removal of American forces from various hot spots around the world. For example, when examining the Middle East, we see Kuwait with its high standard of living, totally reliant on US military protection. And indeed if we were to immediately withdraw from the region with no warning, there would be negative consequences. But this is the only "what if" that gets attention in this film. What if Kuwaitis had to sell off their super cars and start buying tanks? Would they really be incapable of defending themselves? The same conclusions are drawn in all the regions explored in the film, with the same obvious questions not being addressed as though they are less possible.
The final question asked is what would happen if we left Japan to defend themselves. Would China accept their apologies for past military action and allow them to build up their own defense? The question is answered immediately afterwards with a poorly done CGI nuclear explosion.
While the film was an interesting exploration of a certain agenda, an unbiased documentary this is not.
