Review of The World of Apu (1959) by Eric R — 03 Jun 2010
A powerful humanistic tale by Satyajit Ray. Ray really has a grasp on human emotion and really humanity, and its shown throughout this film. Soumitra Chatterjee gives a great performance as the title character.
As a viewer, I couldnt help but feel completely invested in his plight, especially during the second half of the film. While the film is overall paced well, the beginning is a little less interesting and I was only truly invested after Apu gets married.
The shot selections are never flashy but appropriate and used to perfection when Apu is on his journey of grief. A spotty review, I realize, but this film really needs to wash over me a bit more.
