Review of The Words (2009) by Kyle S — 23 Apr 2013
An un successful writer finds himself rejected again and struggling to make ends meet, after getting a gift from his new wife, and old briefcase, he finds an inedibly written, very old book inside. Wanting nothing more than to change his situation he copies the work and claims it as his own thus rocketing him to stardom and the life he felt he always deserved. The Words tell this story through 3 different parts: 1) Rory Jansen (Bradley Cooper) the struggling writer mentioned above, 2) Clay Hammond (Dennis Quaid) author of the book entitled The Words which tells the story of Rory, and 3) Through the story of how the Old Man (Jeremy Irons) wrote the book Rory found.
The Words is packed with great actors and the story itself is interesting enough but I just never felt like the movie took off. It was kinda just heating up and then it ended. We are left wondering a) who is telling the truth or b) if Hammond is really an Older Rory using a surrogate name and wrote The Words as a way of explaining what he did to The Old Man. Both are interesting options and I choose to believe the second one, so that mini cliff hanger will have to do.
The Words is an acceptable, watchable interesting movie that just never quite grabbed my attention the way I wanted it to.
