I failed to understand why it was widely hated by the critics, considering it is something different from what Cooper has done so far, and Jeremy Irons puts in a mesmerising performance, while Quaid also does well in his brief appearance.

It was quite ambitious and banked on European sensibilities, which didn't go down well with the usual Hollywood audience. Gripping and open ended drama which expects the audience to reach its own conclusion, possibly too much of expectation from people who are used to force fed foregone resolutions.
