Review of The Woman in Black 2: Angel of Death (2014) by Greg B — 02 Jan 2015
"The Woman in Black 2: Angel of Death" is the first film of 2015. January movies are known for being stinkers. As far as this film goes, I just found the movie unnecessary. It's not an awful movie, just a pointless, derivative 90 minutes of jump scares and clichéd special effects that do nothing different than any other mediocre, derivative horror movie before it.
The ghost is not particularly scary; even though she hypnotizes children into killing themselves, she seems like too much of a rip-off of "Mama" to really be a formidable on-screen presence.
The characters are stock, and I didn't really find the backstory particularly impressive. Of course we have the stereotypical gifted youth who for no apparent reason can communicate with the Woman in Black.
Ghosts seem to love talking to kids. The execution of this movie is uneven, as is the cinematography. The movie does not transition between scenes well, and the scares are not well-timed at all. Right from the get-go, the director wanted to make some compelling backstory, but they just turn out putting a bunch of stock, flat characters into a house to have shit happen to them.
You can pass on this movie ----------------------------------------- C.
