Review of The Woman in Black 2: Angel of Death (2014) by Michael M — 25 Feb 2016
I actually really liked the first Woman in Black film. It was a fun haunted house film with some genuine thrills and a likable lead played by Daniel Radcliffe. It wasn't a stellar movie, but it was a fun roller coaster ride of a film. If The Woman in Black is Space Mountain, Woman in Black 2 is the Dumbo ride. This movie has the same gothic atmosphere as the first film, and the performances are all generally good, but for the most part it's really boring. I would watch things that were supposed to scare me, but it was sort of like going through a bad haunted house and each time a scare is attempted you just think "ooh, that's cute, you're trying". That's not to say there weren't points in this movie that did scare me, there were, but they were about as cheap as those internet screamers. Just some creepy thing jumping out at you without warning. In the original, the scares were fun. Here, the scares just pissed me off because of how cheap they were.
It's all really a shame because there were things about this movie that I did kind of like. I liked the premise of the movie, I liked that it wasn't just a retread of the last film, and I liked the atmosphere and look of the movie. I don't necessarily regret seeing the movie overall, there were things about it I did enjoy, but I just can't recommend it because these things were so few it really doesn't make the experience worth it. It's the type of movie where after I saw it I just though "yeah, it was okay I guess," but the more I think about it the more it just annoys me.
