Review of The Woman in Black (1989) by Patrick D — 25 May 2009
I expected more after constantly being deluged with people saying "THAT scene in the movie terrified me!" "OMG, that part ruined my childhood!", etc. if I hadn't read those, this may have been a 4 1/2 star rating.
The part in question is something you'd see at a halloween store and laugh at, but thankfully there are parts in this well-made British TV film that are far more creepier and effective. A man is sent to an abandoned home near a vast marshland to hopefully sell it.
There, he learns the history of the previous owner. Then he begins to hear the sound of a carriage crashing and ungodly screams following, but still nothing in sight. He is soon driven out by the apparition of a Woman in Black, who is beyond creepy, but only when she is observing.
The ending is rather abrupt, but in relation to everything that has occurred before, a very effective way of concluding the story.
