Review of The Wolf of Wall Street (2013) by Rob Y — 27 Oct 2014
Ah the irony... that a movie about the perils of indulgence and excess is itself indulgent and excessive. Did this movie really need to be three hours long? From the opening shots we immediately understand the levels of narcissistic depravity that Leonardo DiCaprio's character eventually scales but this plateau is reached early, and once we've got there, it's occasionally a slog to maintain momentum.
But this one glaring weakness is perhaps the only fault I could find in The Wolf of Wall Street - the film is a perfect combination of powerhouse performances and a great script. The pacing may be flawed but it's hard to imagine what could be cut when everyone is clearly bringing their A game.
