Review of The Wolf Man (1941) by Corey B — 28 Feb 2010
Has some nice atmosphere, and good performances, but compared to James Whale's kinetic, and witty work on The Invisible Man and the Frankenstein series, The Wolf Man feels a little lightweight.
Waggner's direction is flat for the most part (although the final confrontation comes to life), and he doesn't quite bring to life some of the more interesting character moments: there should be a lot more weight to Claude Rains' discovery at the end of the film, but the relationship he has with his son is so cold and clinical, that the moment feels very muted. As well, Larry Talbot's "almost affair" with Gwen doesn't provide any real sparks (and her boyfriend is pretty much a throwaway character).
Obviously has some classic, iconic moments, but it's a bit disappointing overall.
