Review of The Wolf Man (1941) by Andrew F — 14 Oct 2007
I sure did enjoy this one as a kid, from all the gypsy curse business to the foggy woods setting. It's got atmosphere to spare, and a great setup. Watching it from adult eyes, however, it's not exactly the best film in the Universal monster canon.
Chaney's Larry Talbot is sort of a creep in the early scenes, so it's hard to buy him as this tragic figure later. Plus the Wolf Man, as iconic and solid a makeup job it may have been in the 40's, really doesn't do a whole heck of a lot but lurk and snarl.
