Review of The Wolf Man (1941) by Matthew L — 07 Jan 2010
"Even a man who is pure at heart,.
And says his prayers by night,.
May become a wolf.
When the wolfbane blooms.
And the autumn moon is bright.".
The werewolf is my favorite mythological creature, and The Wolf Man is pitch perfect. The set pieces are exquisite, as all classic Universal Studios pictures possess. The werewolf makeup is extraordinary, and has deservingly become a templet for all preceeding werewolf designs (compare the designs of the feet of the wolves in this and Underworld if you're in doubt). Also notable is Lon Chaney Jr., whose melancholy performance evokes genuine empathy for his plight to rid himself of his lychanthropy. The Wolf Man is a great film.
