Leonard Maltin's film guide describes this as a Tommy for kids.
The story revolves around a video game contest. Nintendo executives had final approval on the script, and the various games used in the film. One scene promoted Nintendo's ill fated peripheral, the Power Glove. The final scenes were a promotion for Nintendo's then new game, Super Mario Brothers 3.
Overlooking the product plugs, an alright kid's movie.
