Review of The Wiz (1978) by Richard J — 29 Sep 2007
OK saw this film while young and watch this once a year now on DVD for the last 4-5 yrs, and always being a Michael Jackson admirer of his talent and my mum loving Diana Ross(s) music and aura, I had no chance of never seeing this, it always gets bad reviews , it's too expensive, too lavish, badly directed-Sidney Lumet is a great director (but correct not his best directed film) it's depressing, songs are boring, it's miscast in places.
..Trouble is everyone likes the original Wizard of Oz, I do too, but this is a variation on that theme, it ain't the broadway musical as everyone states (no you muppets it is a film) infact it doesn't really have a happy ending but neither did the original.
..when watching this enjoy it for what it is , and for a musical it has good, songs could be better but this is better then Saturday Night Fever? (which by the way is f*cking atrocious! it is an insult to movie watchers) Grease? (the same) and anything Andrew Lloyd Webber has ever done (have you seen phantom of the opera film, most boirng film of all time!, I nearly smashed the TV in disgust and CATS-I wish a big monster truck splatted them all, Evita (Madonna come on!) is disgusting too) I think this film needs to be watched properly with an open mind and then review it.
