Review of The Wiz (1978) by Richard D — 21 Oct 2016
With everything it has potentially going for it, it's shocking what a dreary mess this film turns out to be. For all his talents as a director, I don't think Lumet was the right man for this job.
He doesn't seem to really know how to shoot musical numbers. Some of the simpler ones turn out okay, but most of them seem to drag on. The cast is game, and do as good a job as they can, and the film is colourful and visually interesting, but I simply cannot wait for it to end.
