Review of The Wiz (1978) by Marvin R — 05 Jul 2010
Ah.. does this film bring back memories. I remember first watching this film back in elementary school as part of an assignment. In basic this film is like a big city, African American take on the original Wizard of Oz. It's a hilarious and colorful film to watch and is most enjoyable with friends and family.
The acting however is more reminiscent of a stage play, and the props, makeup, and costumes look totally ridiculous at times(which actually can be pretty hilarious, such as the flying monkeys or that hilarious metal head with the afro). As far as the music, it's pretty decent but lacks an overall uniformity to tie it all together. Despite it's inventiveness it is pretty difficult to follow and can be hard for some people to understand or even take seriously the first time around.
Overall, despite having some downsides to it; this movie is a great watch, especially when nothing else is on or you are feeling kinda down. You'll laugh and enjoy yourself the whole way through, and even though this is definitely not a classic or the best film of all time, it is still pretty fun to watch.
It's not the best, but it's something that you should at least see once if you get the chance.
