Review of The Witches of Eastwick (1987) by Matthew B — 02 Jun 2008
Who else could have played Lucifer, embodied in the epicurean, Hefnerian sleaze of Daryl Van Horne, but Jack Nicholson? From his introductory snoring to his explosive, Mephistophelean exit, Nicholson delivers one of the hammiest performances of his career, equaling the past and future hysteria of Jack Torrance, Jimmy Hoffa, Jack Napier (the Joker), and Frank Costello.
Cher, Susan Sarandon (marvelous during her impishly musical demonic transition), and Michelle Pfeiffer are all quite good, and Veronica Cartwright is marvelous in a Puritanical, incensed, scene-hijacking performance.
John Williams provides one of his most atmospheric scores.
