Review of The Witches of Eastwick (1987) by Will L — 02 Mar 2016
An interesting bit of a mess of an eighties film that seems to be a proto Burton film, since he was just on his way up with Beetlegeuse coming out the same year, focusing on a coven of women with latent witch powers lamenting about the lack of significant suitors for them until Jack Nicholson comes to town to seduce them for all their worth without them realizing that he may very well be a/the devil.
Plays on a bunch of similiar themes that a lot of these devil films do, the southern lady denouncing the evil ways etc this time by the hilarious Veronica Cartright , and Nicholson doing an early version of the Wolf as the devil playing off of all his devilish charm over the ladies.
The effects are decent for the time but some of the sound effects and the excess are a tad dated/unfortunate and all the roles play up to each performers strengths while not making them stretch. Decent for the time I am sure but doesn't rank as a fully memorable film for any of them, just disposable.
