Review of The Witches (1990) by Adam P — 25 Nov 2008
Excellent Roald Dahl adaptation that doesn't shy away from the real nastyness of it's source material.
For a kids movie, this is really quite frightening stuff. Anjelica Huston is pefect as the grand high witch who gathers her coven together in a plot to rid the world of children only to be thwarted by a boy who gets turned into a mouse.
The mouse effects are yet another brilliant creation from the Jim Henson workshop and the wicthes are amazingly well done. They just look like you would expect a witch to look.
Add to this a great script and terrific performances all round, Rowan Atkinson is a hoot as the hotel owner who's establishment the witches have chosen for their gathering.
This is a wonderfully dark and comic tale from a rich imagination.
