Review of The Witches (1990) by Alison O — 29 Sep 2009
When I heard Alfonso Cuaron was remaking this film for a 2011 release I was intially dismayed but having watched this again I can see that it's a prime candidate for a remake. The early 1990s effects aren't so special and there's a hokey feel to its approach, especially in the initial scenes.
If Cuaron Americanises the story in his version though, this'll still be the better film; it's what Dahl would have wanted (even though he despised the 'happy' ending they added to the 1990 screenplay).
