Review of The Witch (2016) by Dave S — 23 May 2016
While #TheWitch is a very good film, it isn't traditional horror, which is a compliment. In fact, as a quiet folk tale, it is more unsettling at times than it ever is scary. Commitment to period detail (Colonial, 1630) and dialogue made it all the more interesting.
Casting was hugely important, and characters - even the children - were pretty brilliant. The moral, I believe, is stay out of "The Wood." I assume colonial adults often told children of supernatural horrors that awaited them in the forest should they ever get lost as, in reality, getting lost in the woods meant death.
As good as it is, the end could have been edited differently to make it even better.
