Review of The Witch (2016) by Alex M — 25 May 2016
The Witch is an original, low-budget movie that is appealing to "old school" horror movie fans. I watched this the same night that I watched "The Boy" with some friends and the stark differences between these two movies cannot be overstated.
The Witch succeeds as a movie because of excellent acting, real suspense, great writing, terrifying imagery, and good pacing to tell the story of a Puritan family in 17th century New England that is exiled from their community, The family decides to move into the wilderness to start a new life with their faith in God being tested at every turn.
I was fully immersed in this movie and while I had difficulty understanding the dialogue at times, it somehow didn't matter based on the context of the scene. I later found out that the language spoken in the movie was sourced from actual witch trial transcripts.
If you are a fan of "jump-scares" and lazy writing, watch "The Boy". If you're a fan of intelligent, original horror movies, I give a very high recommendation to viewing The Witch.
