Review of The Witch (2016) by Nicholas F — 09 Jun 2016
I really hate to give this movie two stars, but it was disappointingly unsatisfying. The Witch is a beautifully haunting piece of art that captured my attention throughout the entire film. Eggers does an amazing job with this period piece; the dialogue, costumes, and religious superstition are all top notch.
The movie falls apart, however, when it tries to wrap up all the creepy elements into a cohesive story. All the way up to the end I was expecting there to be one "There it is" moment that would make sense of all the unsettling scenes, but I was instead handed no answers.
Again, I really want to give this movie a 4 or 5, but it's difficult to appreciate all the other near-perfect aspects of this movie without a compelling story.
