Review of The Witch (2016) by Urban M — 23 Sep 2016
On surface level, this is a brilliant slow-burn horror film thanks to great sound design and bleak, muted, yet rich cinematography that continuously builds its tension up until it is almost palpable, making the few sharp releases all the more unsettling.
At its core, though, The Witch is a realistically written period-piece drama about isolation, religious fundamentalism (Christianity in particular) and female gender roles supported by immaculate performances across the board.
