Review of The Witch (2016) by Stephanie K — 19 Nov 2017
The Witch is a beautifully crafted and very creepy horror. Following a family that have been exiled from the plantation they lived on due to their extreme religious beliefs. Setting up a farm on the edge of a New England forest, their life takes a downward turn as the ever growing influence of a witch casts a shadow over the family.
Rather than relying on visual and jump scares, The Witch is all about atmosphere. It's a slow burner but as the story progresses, watching the family fall apart in front of you becomes quite chilling and the tension is added to through fantastic use of music.
It's fair to say that The Witch isn't for everyone but if you don't mind your horrors being slower and psychological rather than the traditional ghost/alien/psycho killer creating the tension then The Witch is a must watch.
