Review of The Witch (2016) by Jonathan B — 19 Mar 2018
This is an interesting and very creepy tale of witchcraft in the backwoods of 17th century New England. It is an intelligent and suspenseful supernatural thriller in which a young girl, Thomasin, is repeatedly and unjustly blamed for the woes that befall her family.
The setting makes this a welcome change from the more usual horror movie and immediately brings to mind the story of the Salem witch trials and the Crucible. It is a slow burn which gradually increases the on screen tension with several genuinely scary moments.
This is no teen slasher movie but a dark and disturbing tale that has several scenes that will haunt the memory for quite sometime and has an ending that I really wasn't expecting.
