Review of The Witch (2016) by Alonso A — 27 May 2016
The Witch is for sure one of the most unique and engaging movie going experiences of the year. Visually, the cinematography is as harrowing as it is creepily beautiful. With the help of some stellar Kubrickian music, the atmosphere director Eggers creates is one that draws you in and keeps you the tension and the feeling of eeriness throughout the whole running time.
Even in it's most mundane conversations and with it's slow burning pace, The Witch never feels like it drags, on the opposite, the situations and the relationships between characters is so interesting and well-developed it reminds of the way Bergman would treat such material as this.
It's a shame that the last five minutes of the movie stray a bit from the tonal consistency of the entire film, but still, the disturbing imagery and the satisfaction of being effectively submerged in an unsettling atmosphere make The Witch a must watch not only for horror fans (as it is more akin to classic European horror), but for cinema goers in general.
Stunning.
