Review of The Wind That Shakes the Barley (2006) by Jeni W — 11 Oct 2008
Interesting movie about the Irish War of Independence and subsequent civil war from 1919 to 1921. I was amazed that the British and Irish treaty supporters seemed unable to understand why many Irish citizens didn't want to settle for conditional self-rule instead of complete independence.
Even though the characters are all fictional, the events portrayed are supposed to be fairly accurate and portray the spirit of the times. It was all the more interesting considering that I didn't previously know anything about Irish history.
I Wikipedia-ed the movie to get more background information about the events leading up to war. One thing that the movie glosses over is the fact that the politicians of Northern Ireland overwhelmingly voted in support of becoming British subjects in the month AFTER the treaty was signed.
The movie makes it seem like keeping Northern Ireland British was a British stipulation in the treaty.
