The birth of the IRA is chronicled by Loach in this unflinching and ultra-realistic story of two brothers. I was riveted from beginning to end and the performances are flawless. Despite being a politically heavy film, I was surprised at just how much I was caught up in the emotional drama of the two main characters.
It also sums up the difficult dilemma that has faced Ireland for the past eighty years. It's no small wonder that the film took home the Palm D'or at Cannes.
