It's rare to see a film with such a focus and reverance for the human voice. Perhaps it's the low budget (they didn't seem to have money for blood packs), but The Wind That Shakes the Barley uses speaking as a soundtrack.
Voices weave and overlap. The resonate into the empty corners of rooms or echo through lush landscapes. There's an air of authenticity to this film as voices mill in the background and actors stumble over their lines, so much so that the movie succeeds in spite of its budgetary limitations.
More than that, it excels. Hats off to Cillian Murphy and Liam Cunningham, who ground this film dramatically without treading into the realm of melodrama. This is a beautiful, heartbreaking, aural film.
