Review of The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill (2003) by Guinevere R — 02 Sep 2007
Are you turned off by documentaries? Does the thought of watching some bird-feeding societal dropout get evicted from his low rent apartment elicit little or no compassion from you? Great, then this is the movie for you! Hard-bitten types who are dragged screaming and kicking to this film by their more sensitive significant others will be pleased to find that their earlier preconceived notions have been proved baseless.
You don't have to be a bird lover, or a Bohemian, or a West Coast Zen Buddhist, or even a lover of San Francisco's wonderfully picturesque neighborhoods to develop a liking for this story. It does help though to give it a chance, that is you can promise not to make any snide comments for the first 20 minutes.
By the time the credits roll you may be smiling. More honest and self-aware folks may even apologize for any premovie surliness; more stubborn skeptics will at least admit that it didn't suck.
