Honestly people like Sergio Leonne and Sam Peckinpah have established the perfect westerns, capabale of outmatching greats like John Ford. A top notch cast lead by the great William Holden, who made a career out of laid-back, easy going, what the hell sorta of characters, but here he plays against type.
The movie is led by Peckinpah's perfect sense of poetry and violence.
