One of the landmark films of the late '60s, Sam Peckinpah's masterpiece is one of the greatest westerns of all time and required viewing for fans of the genre. Along with Sergio Leone, Peckinpah brought a gritty sense of realism to the western, and populated his films with brutal (and graphically realistic) violence, complex characters, and downbeat themes.

After four decades, this still resonates, climaxing with one of the best (and bloodiest) gunfights in all of cinema history. Though panned by some critics in its day who were shocked by the bluntness of its violence and nudity, it's now rightly regarded as a classic, and its influence on the modern action genre cannot be denied.
