Review of The Wild Bunch (1969) by Chris H — 01 Apr 2012
Peckinpah's shooting style is the bulk of what gives this any appeal. I've never been a fan of Holden and this doesn't change things. Good performances are undercut by characters that aren't particularly likable or interesting. The one charcter that shows any promise - Ryan's outlaw-turned-bounty-hunter - is shoved to the outskirts of the film.
Certainly a nifty looking example of the genre with a revolutionary style, but lacks much of the heart or character of greats like The Magnificent Seven or The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. Worth watching, though, but only for Action or Western fans and only to see Peckinpah's distinctive, adventurous style.
