Review of The Wild Blue Yonder (2005) by Tibor B — 09 Jul 2009
Most closely related to Herzog's early film Fata Morgana, this combines a science fiction narrative told by Brad Dourif's "alien" from Andromeda of his race's escape from their frozen planet to earth and vice versa a human space exploration to Andromeda to set-up a colony.
Herzog uses a variety of archive space and undersea footage to add visuals to the story and it is the usual Herzog combination of long stretches of footage with vivid musical pieces (here a sombre combination of cello, African singers and throat yodelling) to create a mesmerising (some may call boring?) experience.
Aptly described by Herzog himself as a visual symphony, its a truly bizarre experience from a visionary director.
