Review of The Wife (2017) by Daniel V — 19 Dec 2018
Behind the Seven Seals.
All families have their secrets. However, some secrets are more than just a family enigma. This movie, based the novel by the same name, shows an example of structural violence and the Swedish syndrome. Structural violence, defined by Johan Galtung (1969), means the harmful impact of certain values and norms on people keeping them from their needs. This story shows how certain institutions limited female authorial voices in literature, as well as their opportunity to be published and achieve financial security. Usually, it was the husband who gained the undeserved popularity and recognition, using his wife are as a "creative slaves." And wives, falling into the definition of the "Swedish syndrome", don't blame their oppressors. The movie "Wife," outstandingly played by Glenn Close, reveals multifaceted roles of the female character in the marriage: kingmaker, muse, "a partner in crime." Sometimes, their effort created a liar and " narcissistic bastard.", but true love keeps everything behind the seven seals, despite the suspicions of the investigation journalism.
