Review of The Wife (2017) by Ray H — 13 Aug 2018
The Wife is a star vehicle for Glenn Close and she doesn't disappoint. Close plays Joan Castleman, a woman who appears to have it all...a successful author husband Joe (Jonathan Pryce) and two children.
When Joe is informed he's to receive a Nobel Prize for literature, years of festering bitterness and distance begin to bubble in Joan. It's revealed quite early that Joe may not be the wordsmith we think and when a biographer (Christian Slater) starts sniffing around the tension boils over and the truth becomes clearer.
And perhaps Joe hasn't been the best husband. It's what they call a slow burn, takes a while to get going but once the movie hits stride it's a masterful display from Close that brings it to a bittersweet conclusion.
I thought there could be a little more drama in parts, but a fine film and a welcome change of pace.
