Review of The Wicker Man (1973) by Paul N — 18 Jan 2013
This film is one STRANGE cat. I've heard so much about how creepy and haunting this film is and... I gotta tell ya, I didn't really feel it. It's thematically interesting -- the puritanical Policeman having his faith challenged at every turn by the Pagan islanders.
.. it's like British colonisation all over again -- and the actors are all great, but it's much too wacky and (dare I say) dated to be really frightening. The music score, in particular, is really off-putting, too jaunty to be anything but just bizarre and/or funny.
Plus, as someone who's avowedly anti-Christian, I didn't find much of the hedonistic behaviour of the Summerisle inhabitants that shocking. Sure, the whole 'human sacrifice' and 'pregnancy through prayer' thing were bizarre, but orgies, singing and a naked Britt Ekland? Bring it on!
