Review of The Wicker Man (1973) by Shane D — 26 Jan 2016
A bizarre black-humor-drenched pseudo-horror film (that also happens to be a bit of a musical), The Wicker Man seemed ready-made for cult status when it was released back in 1973. Despite the frequent use of creepy wiccan-esque imagery and featuring a plot involving a missing girl, The Wicker Man isn't very scary, and often falls close to camp (the ending just rings as a punchline).
That's not to say that the film doesn't sport craft, with Robin Hardy directing with a great eye for evocative shots, while understanding the wit of Anthony Shaffer's script. Great performances too, particularly from the one-and-only Christopher Lee, whom never disappointed in his villain roles.
Not quite a classic as some plot elements seem dated, but a unique exercise in genre.
