Review of The Wicker Man (1973) by Jamie B — 25 Apr 2009
Well it seemed pretty obvious to me, right from the start, that this oddity came from the 70s. The musical numbers--yes, you've heard correctly, I said musical numbers--some of which included naked chick(s) frolicking and/or cavorting about in a mostly unsexy manner, were unexpected here and seemed out of place in what, I was under the impression, was supposed to be primarily a creepy tale about a bizarre island cult.
These scenes pushed this flick into a new movie category territory that I'm not sure the world was ever really in need of. I'm calling it cheesy creepy. And not in the fun, campy dress-up-in-costumes-and-sing-along way like, say, Rocky Horror Picture Show, which has a sense of humor about itself.
No, this one is entirely serious which makes it all the more disturbing in an entirely-impossible-to-take-seriously sort of way.
